“Navikaya” Social Security Benefit Scheme
About Navikaya Scheme
This is a Special Social Security Scheme introduced for Seafarers by the Sri Lanka Social Security
Board
and the Merchant Shipping Secretariat jointly, with the objective of providing financial care at the
necessary time, enabling seafarers to live with dignity while ensuring the required social security
protection.
The scheme covers essential areas such as aging, inactivation due to employment, work accidents and
injuries,
employment-related diseases, family benefits, and protection for dependants. These are fulfilled
under nine
(09) sections of social security requirements implemented on behalf of seafarers in accordance with
the
Regulations enacted under the Merchant Shipping Act No. 52 of 1971, in compliance with the
International
Labour Organization’s Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC 2006), ratified by Sri Lanka.
